Have you ever noticed how often photographers talk about their style? As an image maker your style is your calling card, part of your brand and what sets you apart from the competition. No one captures a shot quite the way you do. Which is why clients seek you out.
But when you’re looking for a photographer, you don’t want your photographs looking like anyone else’s. Or for them to look the same as every other clients in that photographer's portfolio. The questions you need to ask when choosing a photographer is do they have a distinctive style? And most importantly, can they adapt that to create something unique and a new vision for each subject they shoot? Is it about you, or is it just about their style?
What do you imagine when you think of having a photo shoot with you and your horse or an important life event like a wedding? Is your style edgy, contemporary and filled with expressive shadows and nuance? Or are you softer, dreamy and warm with your emotions on show? Does that photographers portfolio have a distinctive vision but which changes like the light along with the client’s personalities? Or do all their images look kind of the same even though the subjects and locations change?
When choosing a photographer remember – it’s about you and your image. Not the photographers. Make sure their style refines, not defines yours. You’re more than an image - you’re an icon. And icons set the style.
